"But even when they broke up, I knew she still loved my boy and they stayed friends right to the end," she added. In a 2012 interview, Mercury's mother, Jer Bulsara, said she wished the couple could have gotten "married and had a normal life with children." “I don’t have that many people to turn to…the only one…is Mary, who has been a girlfriend of mine for a long time and even though we’re not together right now, I refer to her a lot and she’s the only friend I would say that I can refer to.” I don’t think I do, people tell me they're my friends ,” he told Wigg in a 1985 interview. Mercury bought Austin an apartment and spoke highly about her in interviews. Though their romantic relationship ended, the pair remained incredibly close. He had gone off the idea and it never happened." “And, as Freddie hadn’t said anything more about marrying, the only way that I could test the water was to say, ‘Is it time I bought the dress?’ But he said no. “Sometime later I spotted a wonderful antique wedding dress in a small shop,” Austin said. So I asked him, ‘Which hand should I put this on?’ And he said, ‘Ring finger, left hand.’ And then he said, ‘Because, will you marry me?’ I was shocked. I remember thinking, ‘I don’t understand what’s going on.’ It wasn’t what I’d expected at all. Eventually, I found a lovely jade ring inside the last small box,” Austin said. Inside was another box, then another and so it went on. Austin and Mercury developed a romance and within four years were engaged.
